Amanda Sarfelt is a multidisciplinary artist born in Denmark and raised in the vibrant city of Bangkok before moving to Switzerland and Italy to cultivate her artistic practise. Amanda Sarfelt has been largely based in her studio in Milan working with mainly oil painting as well as performance and instillation work.

Amanda Sarfelt’s work repurposes features of our environment, imbuing them with a new life and meaning. Her art is a testament to her belief that human-made objects are as natural as the world around us. She challenges the traditional dichotomy of man versus nature, urging us to consider ourselves as an intrinsic part of the natural world, not its consumers.

The paintings are carefully brought to existence with very intentional steps. The canvas material is often kept as untreated as possible (not primed and not bleached) The act of absorption the paint goes through when marrying the fabric of the canvas is a process placed in focus. Staying true to materials and letting their nature take the center stage is an intentional act by the artist. Today, Amanda Sarfelt is based in London and is studying at the Camberwell College of Arts, UAL.

“MAN-MADE OBJECTS ARE NATURAL. I RENOUNCE THE ACCEPTED MENTALITY OF SEPARATING HUMANS FROM NATURE. I RENOUNCE THE BELIEF THAT THE WORLD IS FOR MANKIND’S CONSUMPTION. WE MUST CONSIDER OURSELVES TO BE PART OF NATURE IN ORDER TO RESPECT IT.”
